Orange is one of NSW’s fastest growing regional centres but the café culture in and around this foodie and wine lovers haven is a bit of a paradox: it’s so good it’s near impossible to choose just one caffeine pit stop!
Although by no means a full list here’s three of my top cafe picks for the region. Each listed gets a mention not only because they make great coffee (that is a prerequisite for ant cafe now surely?) but because they offer something unique that is over and above!
Byng St Café and Local Store: look for the bright red door!
Coffee: Allpress (one of the few in Orange to serve this urban coffee fave!)
Opens: from 7 am (every day) for breakfast, lunch as well as dinner on Thursday and Friday nights (Supper Club - 4 courses for $40!)
Menu: Changes seasonally, muffins and bread baked freshly onsite, uses quality local produce as much as possible.
My pick for brekkie: breakfast bruschetta with smoked salmon, smashed avo and feta.
USP: The café’s country charm and the fact it’s a licensed venue with a great wine list (featuring none other than Nashale Lane wines!). The restored building (once a corner store) is quaint and not something you’d stumble upon easily in urban capitals. It does get busy during peek morning 8-9am (it’s a locals haunt) but it has a great vibe and service is efficient!
The Lakehouse Café and Kiosk
Coffee: Bill’s Beans
Opens from: 8.30am (Wed-Sunday note in Winter opening times may vary)
Menu: Breakfast and lunch. Limited but delicious menu – note though it’s fixed (they don’t allow even small changes!).
My picks: The Lakehouse’s take on an egg and bacon roll is the ‘Little Beauty’ - it’s on the smaller side but will not leave you wanting!
USP: The stunning location right on Lake Canobolas, nestled between vineyards is hard to beat for the pure chillax factor.
Coffee: Bill’s Beans
Opens from: 6.30 am (Mon-Fri), 7 am (Sat & Sun)
Menu: Breakfast and lunch. Offer a wide range of menu options, uses local produce. Pick from the menu is newcomer Huevos Rancheros - fresh corn tortillas, house made black beans, avocado, Trunkey creek (local) chorizo, fried eggs, cheese and sour cream, with a side of jalapeños! Yum!
USP: Exceptional quality coffee, staff are extremely personable, 50c discount on takeaway for people using their own cup, funky industrial vibe.
